In short

We’re a small Amsterdam based design studio that likes to invent and build!

Since graduating from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2008 I’ve been combining design and technology.

Being able to act as a designer as well as a ‘builder’ has proved to be quite useful and has allowed me to develop many creative solutions and systems in both commissioned projects and self initiated projects.

Beeld/Bank is a private image archiving application I’ve been working on since 2009. It allows you to digitally archive your images in a more organic and loosely structured way. It presents a fresh selection of your archived images every time you open up the archive. You can add thoughts or ideas to an image in the archive by means of entering additonal text or images to document that thought.

The purpose of the archive is to play a role in a creative process, by using images as reference material in a design process, or by triggering new ideas. It enters the world of ideation (idea generation), and allows you to document the thoughts and ideas you get while browsing through your archive, and seeing interesting connections between images. The real magic happens in our brain, and Beeld/Bank allows you to document that magic for future use.

After positive responses from fellow designers I’ve decided to give others the possibility to use Beeld/Bank as well, it is currently being tested by various designers and artists. On the roadmap is a feature to be able to work collaboratively.

cas5050/stamping machine

– 2008

— As my graduation project at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (2008) I created an output device that combines computer controlled precision and the aesthetics of rubber stamps to print posters.

By building the machine from scratch I created an open and easy to use device, which allows the physical production of a printed work to become part of the design process. Next to automated stamping the machine has also been fitted with numerous other materials such as markers and pencils, with which it can draw. The maximum paper size is 70 × 100 cm.

The hardware consists out of two steel frames, a surface constructed out of plywood board, upon which linear guides and carriages are driven by toothed belts and stepper motors. The software was written in Processing and Scriptographer.
